Officers responded to the scene in the 1000 block of 45th Street, right by IDEA Public Charter School, where they found two teens with gunshot wounds, the website said.
Law enforcement's initial investigation revealed that one student entered the school not wearing his proper uniform and then left the building, NBC4 Washington said.
Then, two other students walked into the building and when they tried to bypass a security guard using a metal detector wand, they left the building afterward, officials said.
The three students then met outside the school, before a 15-year-old shot and wounded the other two teens present, NBC4 Washington said.
The school was placed on lockdown after the incident, according to NBC4 Washington.
